There are different ways to show the numbers in a math problem.

                       To show those numbers you can:

                              Use numerals

                              Use symbols/pictures

                              Use place-value blocks
 

Examples:

Abby had 5 fish in her aquarium. 
She went to the pet store
and bought 6 more. 
How many fish does
she have now?

numerals
          
 5 + 6
symbols
          
                                 +
           
place-value blocks
           
 +  

Liz read 6 books last month while Ben read 4 books. 
How many more books
did Liz read?

numerals
           
6 - 4
symbols
           
place-value blocks
           

Bonnie played golf yesterday.
She had 4 strokes on each of the first 3 holes and 3 strokes on the 4th hole. 
What is her score through the first 4 holes?

numerals
          
 4 + 4 + 4 + 3
symbols

              + 
place-value blocks
