Math has special vocabulary words that
help you explain and understand
problems and solutions.

Let's look at some ways vocabulary words are used in math.


cube
a solid figure whose faces are all squares

face
a flat surface of a solid figure


 

  How many faces does a cube have?

                     

  What is the shape of each face on a
 
cube?   

                

 


square
a quadrilateral that has 4 equal sides
and 4 right angles

symmetry
a figure has symmetry if it can be folded along a line so that both parts match exactly


 

  How many lines of symmetry does a
  square
have?
                   

  How many lines of symmetry can be
  found in this
triangle?

               

 


addend
a number added to find a sum

sum
the number that is the result of adding two or more addends


 

 
  What
addends could you use to obtain a
 
sum of 6?

      

  What is the sum of 6 + 5 ?

      
 

 


factors
numbers that are multiplied together
to obtain a product

product
the number that is the result of multiplying two or more factors


 

  Name the factors of 6.

             

 What is the product of 3 and 5 ?

      

 

 


difference
the number that is the result of subtracting one number from another

subtraction
an operation that tells the difference between two numbers

 

 
  Bill has 6 books and Bob has 8 books.  
  What is the
difference ?

       

  Katie walks 10 blocks to school and
  Kathy walks 6 blocks. Use
subtraction
  to find the
difference.

        
 

 


quotient
the number that is the result of dividing

division
a number that tells how many groups there are or how many are in each group

 

 
  Find the
quotient when dividing 24 by 3.

        

  Mae has 12 books that she wants to
  place equally on 2 shelves. Use

  division
to find the solution.

          
 

 


graph
a picture that shows data in
an organized way

data
information used to make calculations


  Sue wanted to display the data she
  collected asking her friends their
  favorite color. She chose to show that
 
data in a graph.
