                                To check an answer you can:
                   ✓  Use estimation.
                   ✓  Do the opposite operation.
                   ✓  Work the problem again.


Let's look at examples of each one.
 


  Sue is shopping for school.
  She buys a backpack for $18.00 and  
  sneakers for $39.00.
  How much did she spend?


  ✓  Use estimation.

  Solution:
           $18.00 + $39.00 = $57.00

  ✓  round $18.00 to $20.00
          
round $39.00 to $40.00
               
$20.00 + $40.00 = $60.00
               
$60.00 is close to $57.00
      
So, your answer is reasonable

 Sandy is cleaning her room.  She finds 12 books that she's already read, and she
 decides to give them to her 3 friends. 
 If each friend gets the same number of
 books, how many will they each get?


 

  ✓  Do the opposite operation.

  Solution:
         12 ÷ 3 = 4 books

  ✓  4 x 3 = 12

✓✓✓✓✓✓✓✓✓✓✓✓✓✓✓✓✓✓✓✓✓✓✓✓✓✓✓✓✓✓✓✓✓✓


 Stan is collecting cans to raise money for his baseball team. 
 He collected 24 cans on Monday, 32 on
 Tuesday, and 27 on Wednesday. 
 How many cans has he collected in all?


 

  ✓  Work the problem again.

  Solution:
    
24 + 32 + 27 = 83 cans

  ✓  24
          32
       + 27

      
83 cans

✓✓✓✓✓✓✓✓✓✓✓✓✓✓✓✓✓✓✓✓✓✓✓✓✓✓✓✓✓✓✓✓✓✓
