Sometimes you solve math problems that
are written in numbers:
3 + 4 =

And sometimes you solve problems
written in words:

3 girls and 4 boys were in line at the drinking fountain.
How many students were there?

Lets' look at some written problems.

5 children played a fishing game
at the school fair.  Ben went first.
Marlene went after Tim. Jan went
before Tim. If Jake was last, who
 was second.

    Ben    Jan      Tim           Marlene  Jake

                Jan was second in line.

Tickets to the show cost $10.00.
If Terry was to go to the show
with 2 friends.  How much will the
 group pay?

   $10.00
     10.00   or    $10 x 3 = $30
  + 10.00
  $30.00

Liz is making stew.  She needs 3
times as many onions as peppers.
If she needs 8 peppers, how many
 onions does she need.

                8 x 3 = 24 onions
                    or
        8 + 8 + 8 = 24 onions

   Remember:

Math problems can be written in words.

Click on the peppers for practice.
