Subtraction is an operation that tells 
the difference between two numbers, 
  or how many are left when some are taken away.

When you subtract, the answer you get is 
called the
difference.


 

6   -     5      =        1

1 is the difference because it is
the answer to a subtraction problem.

 

There are 3 ways to use Subtraction:

1.) To find out how many are left.

                                                4   -     2      =        2

                -     =    

  If you had  badges and gave away, 
you would have left.
      

2.) To compare two numbers. Find the difference.
 

                                5      
                   -4      
                  ___    ___________
              
1    

Imagine your soccer team scores goals 
and the other team scores
Your team would have scored more goal !

3.) To find the missing part.

               6 
              -2 
             ___  ____________________
               4  

If you looked out your window and saw    butterflies,
then a few minutes later you looked again and saw ,
that means that  of the butterflies just got there.
 

 

 Remember:  The three ways to use subtraction are:

1. Find out how many are left.

2. To compare two numbers (find the difference)

3. To find the missing part
