Many times a math problem can be solved in different ways. When you can tell someone how you figured it out, you will justify your answer. There are many types of problems that will need you to describe to someone how you solved it.

Follow these steps to figure out a problem.

Step 1:  Read and Understand the Question

  • Find the important words.

  • Restate the question telling what it is you need to figure out.

Step 2:  Gather Information for the Problem

  • Reread the problem and pull out numbers or facts you will need to solve the problem.
  • Get other helpful information from diagrams, pictures, graphs, tables, or maps on the page or in other locations.

Step 3:  Plan Your Strategy to Find Your Answer

  • Recall any problem-solving strategies you have learned.
  • Choose the best computation method for the problem.

Step 4:  Evaluate Your Answer

  • Eliminate any choices that do not make sense.
  • Try checking your answer by working backward.
  • Ask yourself if your answer makes sense, or if it is close to an estimation.

Now explain how you figured out the problem to another student or your teacher or parent. Be sure to use words like, "Since I saw the words...in the problem, I knew that..."
