Many times a math
problem can be solved in different ways. When you can tell someone how
you figured it out, you will justify your answer. There are many types
of problems that will need you to describe to someone how you solved it.
Follow these
steps to figure out a problem.

Step 1: Read
and Understand the Question

Step 2: Gather
Information for the Problem
- Reread the problem and pull
out numbers or facts you will need to solve the problem.
- Get other helpful information
from diagrams, pictures, graphs, tables, or maps on the page
or in other locations.

Step 3: Plan
Your Strategy to Find Your Answer
- Recall any problem-solving
strategies you have learned.
- Choose the best computation
method for the problem.

Step 4:
Evaluate Your Answer
- Eliminate any choices that do
not make sense.
- Try checking your answer by
working backward.
- Ask yourself if your answer
makes sense, or if it is close to an estimation.

explain how you figured out the problem to another student
or your teacher or parent. Be sure to use words like, "Since
I saw the words...in the problem, I knew that..." |
