Before
solving a problem on your own, it can be helpful to discuss your
strategy
with a friend or a teacher to be sure you are on the right
track. Tell them how you think you should figure out the problem,
and see if there is another way to solve it. Think about whether
the solution will work. |
|
Follow these important steps. |
|
Step 1:
Understand the problem. |
|
Step 2:
Make
a plan. |
|
Step 3:
Discuss your method and solution with someone else. |
|
Step 4:
Solve the problem. |
Example:

|
Johnny and Robert want to save money for a new bike. Johnny has
already saved $15. His parents will give him allowance of $2 per
week. Robert has saved $10 and he will earn $1.00 per day for
feeding his neighbor's dog. Who will have the most money saved
after 4 weeks? |
Step 1:
Discuss the problem with your group. Make sure you understand
what it is asking.
Step
2:
Decide how you will solve the problem.
Step
3:
Share your ideas with someone else. Discuss whether or not the
strategy will work.
Step
4:
Solve the problem. |
One way to
solve the problem:
|
Johnny
$15 + $2 + $2 +
$2 + $2 =
$15 + $8 =
$23 |
Robert
$10 + (4 weeks =
28 days)
28 x $1.00 = $28
$10 + $28 = $38 |
|
Robert will
have the most money after 4 weeks. |
Try another method to come up with the
same solution.
|
Johnny
$2 x 4
weeks = $8
$15
+ $8 =
$23 |
Robert
7 days in a week =
$7
$7 x 4 weeks = $28
$10
+ $28 = $38 |
