use the break apart method
8 + 5 = 8 + 2 + 3 = 10 + 3 = 13

use doubling plus one
2 + 3 = (2 + 2) + 1 = 4 + 1 = 5

use doubling minus one
3 + 2 = (3 + 3) - 1 = 6 - 1 = 5
