Interactive Geoboard: One of the ways that you can help children with the concept of shapes is to have them work with geoboards. They can use rubber bands to experiment and create the various shapes they learned about in their lessons. In this way they can count the number of sides and edges as they are making the shapes to be sure they are correct. Through working with constructing the shapes they can come to a better understanding of the properties of each shape. If you don't have geoboards in your classroom you can use the electronic version shown below. Click on the image of the geoboard to take you to the interactive version found on the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics site. Using this interactive geoboard the students can create various shapes or multiple shapes of the same type. You can also use this applet while working with a small group or using a projector or large screen monitor to share with the whole class during instruction.
