Patterns and Functions

You can use patterns to decide what numbers come next in a series of numbers.

                          Look for a number pattern.

2, 5, 8, 11, __, __, __

  • What is the difference between each number?

  • Each number is 3 more than the one before it.

  • Use the number pattern to find the next three numbers.

11+3=14   14+3=17  17+3=20

2, 5, 8, 11,
14, 17, 20

  • What's the difference between the number.

  • Each number is 2 less than the number before.

  • Use the number pattern to find the next three numbers.

11, 9, 7,__, __, __,

 11-2=9  9-2=7  7-2=5  5-2=3  3-2=1

11, 9, 7, 5, 3, 1

You can use number patterns to complete a table.

The number pattern is the rule for the table.

IN 2 3 4 5 9 10
OUT 5 6 7

What's the Rule?____________________

What do you have to do to each IN number to get the OUT number below it?

2+3=5   3+3=6   4+3=7

  • You add 3 to each IN number to get the OUT number.

  • The rule for this table is Add 3

  • Use the rule to complete the table. Then write the rule.

IN 2 3 4 5 9 10
OUT 5 6 7 8 12 13

  Rule:    Add 3

Find the number pattern to complete the table.

Then write the rule.

IN 11 10 9 5 7 6
OUT 7 6 5

Rule : ________________

  • You Subtract 4 form each IN number to get the OUT number.

11-4=7   10-4=6   9-4=5

  • The rule for this table is Subtract 4.

IN 11 10 9 5 7 6
OUT 7 6 5 1 3 2

                                               Rule:  Subtract 4
