Mathematical Relationships

You can use addition to help you solve subtraction problems. Subtraction is the opposite of addition.

When you add two numbers together the answer is a bigger number than either of the ones you started with.

When you subtract one number from another the answer is a smaller number than the one you started with.

Think about fact families to solve subtraction problems and see the relationship between addition and subtraction.

Fact families use the same three numbers and put them in different order. Addition and subtraction fact families have 2 addition problems and 2 subtraction problems.

         3      5       8      8
   + 5    + 3     -3     -5
      8      8       5      3
         3      4      7      7
    +4     +3    -4     -3
     7        7     3      4

You can use a hundred chart to add and subtract
Remember, subtraction is the opposite of addition so the directions for addition and subtraction on a hundred chart are opposite of each other.

When you go down one square you add 10. When you go up one square you subtract 10. When you move to the right you add 1 for each square you count. When you move to the left you subtract 1 for each square you count.

To add 10 to 46 go down one square.
The answer is 56.

To subtract 10 from 46 go up one square. The answer is 36.
