When you share things equally you divide.

When you take away equal groups you divide. 

Division is a shortcut for subtraction.

Subtraction

Division
Example:
How many times can you take away
groups of 2 out of 8?
8-2=6, 6-2=4, 4-2=2, 2-2=0
Answer: 4 times

When you have 8 cookies to share equally and give each child 2 cookies, you have enough for 4 children.
