Do you know how to count by 5's?  If you do, telling time in five minute intervals will be very easy for you.

Let's look at this clock:

Look at the lines along the outside edge of the clock.  These numbers represent minutes.  Each time the minute hand moves to the next line, one minute has passed

Now let's look at the numbers around the outside edge of the clock.

There are five minutes between each number.

That is why knowing how to count by fives makes telling time so easy!

We learned before that when telling time, we read the hour hand first, then the minute hand.

Now let's try it!

The hour hand says "10" and for the minute hand, we count 5, 10, 15!

10:15

The hour hand reads "2".
It looks like the
hour hand is almost to the three, but we must continue to say 2 until the minute hand goes past the 12 again.

 For the minute hand, we count 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45!

2:45

The hour hand reads "7".
The
hour hand is almost to the eight, but we must continue to say 7 until the minute hand goes past the 12 again.

 For the minute hand, we count 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, 55!

7:55

The hour hand reads "9".
The
hour hand is about half way between the nine and the ten, but we must continue to say 9 until the minute hand goes past the 12 again.

 For the minute hand, we count 5, 10, 15, 20, 25!

9:25

The hour hand reads "6".
The
hour hand is about half way between the six and the seven, but we must continue to say 6 until the minute hand goes past the 12 again.

 For the minute hand, we count 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35!

6:35
