When adding whole numbers ,
 with regrouping, 
simply add each column starting with the ONES place
and move left.

However, if the column's sum 
is greater than 9 (or two-digits),
carry the digit that is in the tens place of the answer 
to the next column to the left.
(Only the digit in the ONES place of the answer stays in that column.)

547 + 325 =

 +1
  5 4 7
+3 2 5
  8 7 2

because 7+5 = 1 2, 
keep the 2 in that column
and carry the 1 to the next column
and continue to add.

4,468 + 4,215 =

            +1
    4, 4 6  8                             
+  4, 2  1  5      
        8, 6 8  3      

  add each column:   
                   ones                                              tens         hundreds       thousands        
      8+5=13 ,                  1+6+1=8,  4+2=6,  4+4=8          
(keep the 3 and carry the 1)                          

                     so,  4,468 + 4,215 = 8,683

REMEMBER:

  ALWAYS  
have the place value columns lined up 
(ie: ones, tens, hundreds, etc.)

then add each column 
starting with the ONES column, 
and move left.
