Operations

 

Division is an operation that tells 
how many groups there are, 
or how many in each group.

The number you Divide by is called the DIVISOR,

The Number you are Dividing up is called
 
the
DIVIDEND;

And the
Answer you get is 
the
QUOTIENT.
   

 10                          2         =     5
    
Dividend       Divisor  =  Quotient
        

10 statues are divided into 2 equal groups.
One group is the Yellow group, the other is the Blue group.
There are 5 statues in each group.


  Examples:

9 3 =
This means that we want to divide 
the total of 9 into 3 equal groups.

9 3 = 3

 

If Mike had 12 marbles 
and he wanted to share them equally with
4 of his friends,
how many marbles would each person get?

12 4 =

           Friend #1                      Friend #2                      Friend #3                     Friend #4    

12 4 =
                                    marbles each

       Quick Tip:

When you are dividing, 
   think of multiplying the number sentence in reverse .
      

15   5 = 3,  because  3 x 5 = 15

Example:

20 4 = ?
well, 
? x 4 = 20
5 x 4 = 20,
so 20
