Teacher Tips

  • Students benefit from long term preparation.

  • Frequent practice with applying prior learning in problem-solving settings enables students to solve what they know when they take the test.

  • In preparing your students for the Grade 4 mathematics test, allow 10 –15 minutes of class time each day to discuss solutions, strategies, and test-taking tips.

  • Encourage students to use words and pictures, diagrams and charts, to improve their explanations and expand their problem-solving skills.

  • Help students understand what scorers expect by discussing the rubric with the students. Have students score their own answer to a practice test using the rubric. Discuss the solution and have students revise their work to improve their score.

REMEMBER: it takes daily practice for students to become good communicators. Giving your students daily opportunities to share ideas and discuss their answers improves their communication skills.
