The Great Seal

The Great Seal of the United States

The birth of our nation began with the signing of the Declaration of Independence* on July 4, 1776.  The founding fathers agreed to form a committee to design a symbol or emblem* to represent the new United States. This symbol, they believed should represent the future of the new country.  It should stand for a belief in democracy* and the freedoms they valued.

It was not until six years and several committees later however, on June 20, 1782, that a symbol was finally agreed upon.  It became known as the Great Seal of the United States.

*Declaration of Independence: a document explaining why the colonists were breaking away from England
*
symbol or emblem:  an object representing something
*democracy:  a government in which citizens elect representatives to make decisions for them
