Population of Cities: 1790-1830
The table above shows the biggest cities in the United States between the years 1790-1830. These cities were some of the first communities settled in our country. They were the first to have large populations.* The numbers tell us the number of thousands of people who lived in a city. For example, a number 6 is equal to 6,000 people. There is not a number in the box if that city had fewer, or less, than 1,000 people in that year.
In our lesson "Why do People Settle in Certain Areas?" we learned that the earliest settlements were usually on or near water. All of these cities are located on or very near waterways. Some have harbors on the ocean. Others are located on or near rivers. *population: the number of people who live in a place.
