There was a time in our history during the 1930’s, when our nation's economy broke down.  It was a sad time of hopelessness and suffering for many Americans.  Men and women who had worked to support their families saw factories and businesses close their doors. With people out of work, many lost their homes.  Families who had always had plenty to eat were now hungry.  There was no market for goods because there was no money available to purchase them.  This period has become known as the Great Depression.

When resources are scarce, or not available, people must make decisions in order to satisfy their basic needs of food, clothing and shelter.
