Making a living in New York State

People in New York State make their living in many ways. Agriculture (farming) is a big business in our state.  We raise cattle and other livestock. We grow crops such as apples, vegetables, and trees for lumber.  Our factories and industries provide jobs to many New Yorkers.  We manufacture machinery, chemicals, scientific instruments, and clothing.  We publish newspapers, books, and magazines.  Millions of tourists come to our state each year visiting attractions, staying in our hotels and eating at our restaurants. They buy goods and use services produced in our state.

Producers: People who supply or make goods or services for  consumers
Consumers: People who buy or use products or services
Goods: Products that are tangible (touchable)  made by producers and bought by consumers;  Examples:  food and clothing
Services: Work that is done for consumers that does not result in tangible (touchable) products;  Examples:  teaching, firefighting, healthcare
