America has often been called the "land of opportunity."  The United States was been settled by immigrants seeking a new life, greater freedom, and a fresh start. Most Americans can trace their family origins to other countries. Waves of immigrants* have come to the United States from countries throughout the world, but most have come from Europe.

*immigrants:  those who have moved from other countries

Directions:  Base your answers to the questions below on the immigration graph and your knowledge of social studies.

3.  America's Great Depression was a period during the 20th century when our nation's economy broke down.  People were out of work, businesses closed, many people were hungry and homeless.
