Where in the World are We?

The earth is divided into halves called hemispheres.  The top half is called the Northern Hemisphere.  The bottom half is the Southern Hemisphere.  The dividing line, called the equator, is an imaginary line half way from the North Pole and the South Pole.  The earth is also divided into halves east and west, by the Atlantic Ocean. The half of the earth east of the Atlantic Ocean including Europe, Asia, Australia, and Africa is called the Eastern Hemisphere.  The Western Hemisphere includes North and South America and the surrounding waters. We are located in the Northern and Western Hemispheres.

Our world is divided into seven continents.  We are on the continent of North America. Our continent is divided into countries, Canada, Greenland, the United States, Mexico, and the countries of Central America.

Our country is the United States of America. Most of our country is south of Canada and Greenland.  Alaska, which is west of Canada, and Hawaii, which is west of the United States in the Pacific Ocean, are also part of the United States. We are north of the Central America and the country of Mexico. Our country is bounded by the Atlantic Ocean to the east and the Pacific Ocean to the west.

Fifty states make up the United States.  We live in the state of New York.  New York State is located in the northeastern part of the United States. It is in a section called the Mid-Atlantic States. It is bordered by the states of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Vermont.  Lake Ontario, and the St. Lawrence River form most of the northern boundary.  Lake Erie and the Niagara River form the western boundary.

Oswego County is located in about the center of the state going east to west.  It is on the northern boundary of the state, south and east of Lake Ontario.  Oswego County is a large county with many cities, villages, and towns. Many people live in the Townships of Oswego, Minetto, and Scriba, in the northwestern part of the county.

The city of Oswego is on the southern shore of Lake Ontario.  It is divided by the Oswego River which runs through the city into the lake.
