A satellite image is a photograph taken from a camera mounted on a satellite, or other spacecraft, far above the earth. This is an image of the area that includes New York State and parts of its bordering states. The borders have been drawn with red lines.  Some of the New York State's borders are natural, like lakes and the ocean, and some are man-made border lines.

Directions:  Look closely at the satellite image above. Base your answers to the questions below on the map and your knowledge of social studies.

3. Several of New York State's boundaries are lakes.  Why do you think the red border line divides these lakes equally down the middle? What does this mean as far as determining ownership of the lake?
