Effects of the American
Revolution

The Treaty of Paris*, officially
ending the American Revolutionary
War, was signed on September 3, 1783. The
American representatives who went to Paris to sign the treaty were
Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, and John Jay. The following items were
agreed upon in the treaty:
- The United States of America would
now be recognized as a new independent nation
- The boundaries of the new United
States of America were set by an imaginary line through the Great
Lakes to the north, the Mississippi River to the west, the Atlantic
Ocean to the east and Spanish Florida to the south
- The Mississippi River could be used
by citizens from the United States, Britain, France, Spain, and
Holland
- All British soldiers must leave the
United States
- Property belonging to Loyalists
who decided to remain in the United States would be returned to
them, and they would be treated fairly
- Florida would be returned to Spain
- The United States would pay all of
the debts they owed to England
*A treaty
is a written agreement between two countries.
