The following is a picture of the New York State flag.  Even though New York became a state in 1788, this flag wasn't adopted until 1901.  As in all flags, each part of the picture symbolizes something.

"Liberty" is the figure on the left.  She represents freedom. She is holding a pole with a liberty cap on it, and she has thrown away the crown, seen at her feet.

"Justice" is the figure on the right.  She represents justice before the law. She is blindfolded and is holding the scales of justice.
