There are many good web sites that give good biographies of the different explorers mentioned in this lesson.  The following are a few good sites:

http://www.civilization.ca/vmnf/vmnfe.asp  This site has a section all on North American Explorers.  It is a Canadian site and reminds us that many explorers who had an impact here in present day New York State, also had an impact in Canada.

http://www.civilization.ca/vmnf/cartes/puzzle-e.htm  Courtesy of Canadian Museum of Civilization Corporation (CMCC)  This site is a puzzle where the student needs to place a map into the correct square.  It is interactive and gives the student a feeling for cartography as it was during the exploration period.

Many resources are available to organize your students for projects relating to explorers.  Some are as basic as comparing two explorers or creating your "Top Ten" list, but some are much more involved.  For those of you who really want some novel ideas to get your students interested in these explorers, please examine the site 42eXplore  http://eduscapes.com/42explore/explorers.htm   It is a very special resource for teachers.

The book, Pedro's Journal,  by Pam Conrad could be an introduction to a writing activity.  The book is a diary of the adventures of Columbus' ship's boy.  The reading level is grade 4.
