Compare and Contrast two Schools

The following activity would be an opportunity to teach a "compare and contrast" writing piece.

Refer children to the above lesson on writing a comparison piece.   Encourage the students to use a graphic organizer such as a  Venn diagram  to set up their ideas for writing.

The picture above is one of a school at Coeymans Hollow, outside of Albany, NY.  It has been restored by the Little Red School House Historical Society.

The picture below is  a school found in the town of Mohawk, also near Albany.  More information can be found at this site.

http://www.sckans.edu/~orsh/  The One Room School House Project site is a compilation of articles about schools and the people who built and attended them, and the site also contains photographic images of existing and former school sites and textbooks.  It is an excellent resource for more information on this period of our educational history.

http://www.cobleskill.edu/schools/mcs/csbest/school.htm  is an excellent site.  It includes a general history of rural education, and it even includes a quiz with CRQ type questions!

http://www.rny.nysed.gov/r/otherpeople/otherpeople_inclassroom.shtml  is our own state's website filled with examples of lessons using primary source documents.

Getting away from the one room school house era and focusing on today's private vs. public school education debate, would be found at: http://www.publicagenda.org/aboutpa/aboutpa_press_release_detail.cfm?list=5   This site compares private and public schools in New York City (according to a group called Public Agenda).  This represents some "big city" thoughts on education, much different than those in upstate New York.

Return to lesson!
