Compare and Contrast two Schools The following activity would be an opportunity to teach a "compare and contrast" writing piece.
Refer children to the above lesson on writing a comparison piece. Encourage the students to use a graphic organizer such as a Venn diagram to set up their ideas for writing.
The picture above is one of a school at Coeymans Hollow, outside of Albany, NY. It has been restored by the Little Red School House Historical Society. The picture below is a school found in the town of Mohawk, also near Albany. More information can be found at this site.

It is an excellent resource for more information on this period of our educational history. http://www.cobleskill.edu/schools/mcs/csbest/school.htm is an excellent site. This represents some "big city" thoughts on education, much different than those in upstate New York.
