Directions:  Answers these questions based on the picture above and your knowledge of social studies. Possible answers are included.

1.  Why are the British evacuating (leaving) New York?
After Yorkville in 1781, the Patriots were basically winning the Revolutionary War.  Finally in 1783, the  British and the Loyalists had to accept defeat and leave New York City.

2.  Where might the British troops be going?  They had the choice of going to Nova Scotia or back to England.  Actually because of the large  number of troops and Loyalists needing to leave New York City,  they ran out of transport ships.  Some Loyalists had to wait on Long Island for more ships.
 

3.  What group would have flown the American Flag in 1783? Name one person who would have been included in this group.
The Patriots were flying that flag.   One person who could have been in this group would be George Washington.
