Map Vocabulary banner

Maps can give you a lot of information, but it is important to understand the vocabulary to better understand and communicate the information.  Read the vocabulary words below and their definitions.  Then play a map vocabulary matching game to show how much you learned!
Map - A flat drawing of a place.                       Map
Globe - A model, or copy, of Earth.                      globe
North Pole - The farthest place north on Earth.         North Pole
South Pole - The farthest place south on Earth.            South Pole

Continent - A very large body of land.  Earth has seven continents: North America, the continent where you live, South America, Asia, Africa, Europe, Australia, and Antarctica.


Ocean - A very large body of salt water.  There are four oceans on Earth. The oceans are the Atlantic Ocean, the Pacific Ocean, the Arctic Ocean, and the Indian Ocean.

Compass Rose - A guide to cardinal directions on a map.

Cardinal Directions - Cardinal directions are north, south, east, and west.


Map Key or Legend - A guide that tells what the symbols stand for.       - capital
Scale - A ruler on a map that measures distance to find out the larger, real distance on Earth.

Lines of Latitude -  Imaginary lines running east-west across maps.  


Equator - An imaginary line of latitude that divides Earth into the Northern and Southern hemispheres.


Lines of Longitude - Imaginary lines running north-south on maps.


Prime Meridian and International Date Line - Imaginary lines of longitude that divide Earth into the Eastern and Western hemispheres. 
Hemispheres - Half of a globe.  Earth is divided into four hemispheres shown on the graphic below. The United States is located in the Northern and Western Hemispheres.
