This teacher resource begins with a web activity about the
Masai African tribe followed by a read aloud of the book
Masai and I
by Virginia Kroll. The website will give the students some
background knowledge to help them write a compare/contrast essay. |
| Before reading
the book, have the students access this site about the
Masai
tribe. Print the activity
sheet that they complete with a partner or independently. |
|
After students have completed the web activity sheet,
give each student a copy of the Venn
diagram and the comparison matrix. Read the book,
Masai and I aloud twice. The book compares the life of a girl in
the United States to the life of an African Masai girl. The first time, read the book for the
students to listen to and enjoy. The second time have the students take
notes on the Venn diagram, comparing the Masai tribe to people in
the United States. Next, they should add information that they
gathered from the web site activity. With the whole class,
complete one large Venn diagram. |
| Give each
student a copy of the compare/contrast
assignment and go over the directions. Give each student a copy of
the rubric and go over the
expectations. |
| This activity is
very motivating to students. Other cultures fascinate third
graders. This is a great way for students to learn about the
world around them. |
