Rainforests fascinate children. There are
many wonderful resources to use to engage children and make rainforests "come

The Great Kapok Tree by Lynne Cherry is an excellent book
that beautifully demonstrates the interdependence of the rainforest.
This is a book that you can use to teach cause and effect. Make
sentence strips of some of the effects of cutting down rainforests
and have children match them to the character(s) that talked about
that particular effect.

The Shaman's Apprentice by Lynne Cherry is based on a true
story about a scientist who wanted to discover medicines in the
rainforest and the people who lived in the rainforest and tried to
help him. This is a great book to use to compare/contrast the
people of the rainforest with people of the United States.

focuses on a young boy who lives in a rainforest. This is an
excellent book to show the culture of people who live in
rainforests. This book is an excellent way to compare/contrast with
the book The Shaman's Apprentice.
