If you live in New York State, you are familiar with woodlands or forests.  Woodlands are fascinating regions.

Let's explore woodlands!

Leaves and a tree

Woodlands are referred to as deciduous forests.  Deciduous means the cycle that the leaves follow: they change colors in the fall, fall off in the winter, and grow again in the spring.

Of all the regions in the world, woodlands receive the second most rainfall per year, second only to rainforests.  The average annual rainfall is 30" - 60" and the average temperature is 50º.

Where are woodlands located?

Woodlands are located mainly in the eastern section of the United States, Canada, Europe, and parts of Asia.  They are usually located between 0º - 50º North Latitude. Take a look at the map below.

What are the seasons like in the forests?

Summer: The leaves are green as the forests blossoms.  The trees make food to prepare for winter.

Fall: The leaves begin to change colors.  The forest is alive with magnificent fall colors.  The leaves start to fall as they go into a dormant, sleeping state.

Winter: Snow covers the ground. The deciduous trees and plants loose their leaves and become dormant.
